Tretyakov gallery

The Tretyakov picture gallery boasts the world's largest collection of Russian art. In 1995 its collection included more than 50 thousand items. The museum was founded in 1956 by P.Tretyakov on the basis of his personnel collection which he donated to the city in 1892. After his death the museum was administered by an elected Council.
The museum contains splendid collection of icons, paintings of the Peredvizhniki school. The gallery also features the multi-national art of the 20 th century Russia.
