Cathedral of St. Basil
On the southern side of the Red Square there is one of the most beautiful cathedrals of Moscow - Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed. It was built in 1555-1561 by architects Barma and Poznik to mark the victory over the Khanate of Kazan. It was decided that the Cathedral should consist of 8 separate churches symbolizing days of decisive battles for Kazan . However, the builders creatively interpreted this idea. Between four main pillared churches there are four, smaller in height, churches. They are grouped round the ninth - Church of the Protection of the Virgin Ö and crowned with cupolas. They are all connected with a gallery and inner vaulted passageways.
In 1988 a side-chapel of St. Basil the Blessed was built near the Cathedral. All this was the realization of the ides of "city cathedral", "heavenly Jerusalem", the monument of the world architecture. In 1929 the cathedral was closed, the bells were removed. In 1990 nineteen bells were returned to their places. From 1991 liturgies are offered here from time to time. At present Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed is a brunch of the state Historical Museum . Here you can see one of the richest collections of bells of Moscow but also in Russia .
